Last Wednesday, September 11, the 3rd Grade classes of Ms. Triplett and Ms. Rumble as well as Ms. Beth Swehla’s Agriculture class from AVHS made afield trip to the 3rd Annual National Heirloom Expo held at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa.
All were treated to over 300 exhibitions of organic and heirloom food growing process’ as well as presentations of organic farming practices by local and regional farmers.
The heirloom festival is in its 3rd year and is the premier celebration of organic and biodynamic farming practices in the country. The event is the creation of Baker Creek Seed Company who has a flagship store in downtown Petaluma called the Petaluma Seed Bank on the site of the former Sonoma National Bank.
Tara Lane, garden coordinator for the AV Elementary School, put together an award winning exhibition in the school presentation section. Her effort garnished a 3rd place award from the judges. She was also instrumental in making the field trip happen so successfully.
The heirloom festival helped defray all costs by paying for expense of the two buses as well as they will be sending a few hundred dollars to support the AV school garden projects. Petaluma Seed Bank also donates seeds for our school gardens project.
All and all a wonderful time was had by all and everyone looks forward to attending the event next year.
